Join members of Contemplative Outreach of Central Iowa
(COCI) Centering Prayer community for this monthly gathering.
We begin with a twenty minute Centering Prayer
"sit" followed by viewing and discussing of a video presentation by
Thomas Keating, the Trappist monk who has developed
the contemporary practice of Centering Prayer, a prayer of silence deeply
rooted in the Christian contemplative tradition.
This series is open to anyone who is interested in
developing an understanding of:
·Centering
Prayer and its conceptual background - theological, scriptural, spiritual, and
psychological.
·The
spiritual journey and the challenges of the human condition.
·Contemplation
(which Keating calls the "Divine Therapy") and contemplative living.
·The
values of silence, solitude, simplicity, and service as foundational qualities
of a joyful and fulfilling spiritual life.
The Spiritual Journey Video Series is a 27 set of video
presentations divided into five parts.
Part 1 spoke to Centering Prayer and its development as a
daily spiritual practice.
Part 2 discusses "Models of the Human Condition"
over a period of six sessions.
The focus of Part 2 deals with the question, "What is
the human condition to which the Gospel and the medicine (or therapy) of
contemplative prayer are addressed?"
The following models of the human condition are: 1) The
Evolutionary Model provided by contemporary anthropology. This model presents the human condition as a
process from one level of consciousness to the next.2) The Developmental Model.Developmental psychology points to a similar
process in the growth of each human being from infancy to "the age of
reason".3) The Existential Model. This model is offered by spiritual theology
and reinforced by the discoveries of modern psychology and sociology. It expresses the way human beings actually
develop.
4) The Philosophical Psychology Model. This model was elaborated by the Greek and
medieval philosophers and identifies the faculties and essential relationships
of human nature and how they are designed to function.

Self in Action.Facilitator: Paul Witmer
In November Part 3 of the series will begin: "Paradigms
of the Spiritual Journey" which will offer guidelines for Christian
growth.We'll learn more about Centering
Prayer as a means of healing the human condition through contemplative practice
and action.We discover that the
spiritual journey begins at birth and ends at death and that at each stage of
life God asks us for certain consents. These consents are the pathway to growing in our relationships with God,
self, and others and to growing in life that is sustained by spiritual strength
and integrity.
November 11:The Four
Consents.Facilitator: Jane Tyler
December 9:The Human
Condition: Philosophical Model.Facilitator: Nick Tormey
And the series continues into 2009.Updated information will be given closer to
the end of the year.
